Universities have played their key role while introducing innovations in the field of computer science. Most of the technological breakthroughs have changed the way we used to live and communicate with each other.
Here are some of the mind blowing computer science breakthroughs, which actually started at different universities.
Google Search Engine
In September 1997, two Ph.D. candidates Sergey Brin and Larry Page first time registered Google.com as a domain. Later on, Andy Bechtolsheim, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems delivered a cheque of $100,000 to start the Google Inc.
After that, Google achieved numerous milestones such as the launch of Google Maps, Gmail, and acquisition of YouTube. The estimated worth of Google in today’s world is over $527 billion. The search engine has simply revolutionized the way we used to seek information.
The origin of Facebook relates to a social experiment, which served as a way to create the largest networking site in the world. The basic idea of Facebook was conceived by Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook founder and chief executive) and Eduardo Saverin in 2004 when they were sitting in a university dorm.
Initially, it all started with the idea of Facemash, which was a portal to compare the beautiful faces of the campus. These photos were usually hacked from the photo data of the university, known as facebooks. Later on, Zuckerberg developed a site, which is now gained the authority of the world’s most popular social media platform.
The IT software and hardware giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) was first started in Silicon Valley.
The history of HP and silicon goes hand in hand. In the 1930s, the founders of HP Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett met each other at the university and started to work on a computer science project.
Both Dave and Bill believed that they should offer such products to the clients, which are different from the rest. Their first inventions or product was a resistance-tuned audio oscillator device that was capable of detecting the sound frequencies. Now, HP is a leading brand when it comes to personal computers, printers, and other accessories.
Mosaic Web Browser
After the introduction of ViolaWWW browser, two university students named Eric Bina and Marc Andreessen started working on Mosaic. This browser first came out in 1993. The browser served in a great manner when spreading knowledge throughout the world. However, this browser met its fate after the launch of Netscape.
Spacewar, the First ever Computer Game
Steve Russel, who was a university student, invented the Spacewar game in 1961. It took over 200 man-hours to create a prototype for this game. Among other games like OXO and Tennis for Two, Spacewar was the most popular digital game of that era.
All these computer science related innovations were the beginning of the technological advancements, which we are experiencing in today’s world. These were the first steps that lead us to some of the unbelievable breakthroughs. The most interesting fact about these early advancements is their association with different universities. This shows how innovation and education are closely linked with each other.
